A note about a friend

Shortly after Honor Bound was released, my friend and fellow writer Eiwynn passed away. She was a tireless pillar of the ChoiceScript interactive fiction community, helping writers and players old and new.

I remember reading her posts before I even joined the ChoiceScript forum six years ago, and being interested in what she had to say about interactive narrative. She brought insight and thoughtfulness on writing craft, game structures, and good practice, and was always fiercely curious about craft and rigorous in developing her own work, which was vivid, often surreal, and highly imaginative with a flair of her own.

Along with that, she brought real compassion and support, with a kind word to say to anyone who needed it. For over four years, she ran monthly writer support threads for writers to come together and share their thoughts, triumphs, and woes, and for us to encourage each other. They're a place where all kinds of ChoiceScript writers, no matter how experienced, can regularly discuss what they're up to. For people like me who can't always keep up with individual projects, it's wonderful to be able to catch up with other writers and see what they're doing—and celebrate everyone's achievements and courage in creativity.

On a personal level, when I first joined the community I was nervous to post and share my thoughts, and later my work-in-progress writing, but Eiwynn engaged with me straightaway, quickly making me feel welcome and comfortable. When I joined her in a role as a volunteer community moderator, she was a brilliant teammate and contributed a huge amount in this area, both in public and behind the scenes.

Ever since I started writing with ChoiceScript, she gave me kindness and encouragement. I saw her doing this for many, many writers, and seeing the outpouring of comments about other people's experiences shows that she did even more than I realised.

Thank you for everything, Eiwynn. I hope I could give you even a little of the encouragement that you gave to others. You inspired me in so many ways, and your warmth and support will be sorely missed by me and countless others in the community.
